Cool! A couple of notes for the moment:
When you mentioned Tegu from 3 years ago, George was probably thinking about how it was one of the very best Kenyans he's ever had (as he's expressed to me), and probably didn't hear you ask if it was vacuum packaged. It *wasn't* vacuum packaged.
Of Terroir's roughly 9 Single Origin espressos, there are 6 of them that I'd rather drink instead of the cherry-orangey Matalapa. Matalapa is great coffee though, especially the 2007 vintage. That's just my wee palate in this glorious coffee love fest nest thingy, so, please, nobody take offense.

Just chatted with Matt Riddle, and apparently, there's two different versions of the El Salvador Matalapa from Intelligentsia. The one they had at the trade show (that George raved about and I didn't get a chance to taste) was roasted differently from the one that's currently available for consumer-sale on the Intelly website. This is the one I've been trying to pull shots with. In Matt's words "no wonder you are having problems pulling it as esrpesso!".
There's Espresso Matalapa, and just regular ole' Matalapa (if life were like that "regular ole", give me more of it!).

Hahaha!!! Mark, you did get punked!!! But hats off too you! What a great interview!
At the end of the podcast, Mark, you said that you always enjoy speaking with George Howell. Are you sure you "enjoy" it? You sounded kind of nervous during the interview (I would be too)!
Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the feeling that George is just plain rude. He comes off as very pompous too.

George is way ahead of the times. I've spent forty years in small farm systems development and George really gets it. You can agree or disagree about espresso blending but the rest is solid gold wisdom. I've had the pleasure to visit with him several times and always look forward to the next. farm PS wonder what the finish bean temp of the Matalapa at the Intelli booth was? Some greens of it are arriving in a day or two.

The first time I met George Howell is pretty funny. I was in Boston for the fall SCAA meetings in 2002. I was sitting outside the board meeting waiting to talk to a few board members, and I met Jeff Vojta for the first time (he was not on the board then). We were sitting in comfy chairs, talking coffee, and someone by the name of Geoff Watts walks up (first time I met him too). I knew Geoff already by reputation; so we started chatting the three of us.
Then this older gentleman happens by, and Geoff and Jeff (lol) call him over. They introduce him as George, and we start talking about this and that. I first heard about CoE in that conversation. I first heard some solid information about origin in that conversation. Next thing I know, an hour or two has passed, and Geoff and George beg their forgiveness, they have to go and cup some coffee's at George's place. They leave, and I'm with Vojta.
"Wow, that guy knows a lot about coffee" I said. "And what a nice man as well - he's so polite, yet full of this coffee wisdom. Who is he?"
Jeff looks at me strangely and says "that's George Howell!"
Of course, I knew of George Howell, but had no clue for those nearly 2 hours that this was he. It was one of my best "coffee days", ever.
Ever since then, George has been a complete gentleman to me, a scholarly gentleman, and I am very fortunate to consider him a friend. He's educated me about coffee in ways no one else has ever done. The phrase you often hear - he's forgotten more about coffee than you'll ever know - is so true about George, but with a rub - George forgets very little about coffee in the first place.
I take George for what he is - a Bostonian and all the baggage that comes with that (including perhaps a tone of voice and manner of speech that some may find condescending, but that's not the intent behind the voice, IMO) - he's also a statesman and scholar of the coffee world; he's a champion for farmers; he's a champion for quality coffee; and his palate is one of the best in the biz.
Am I nervous when talking to George? I wasn't that first conversation. I was the next five or ten, but now, while my admiration for him and what he has done and does to this day is massive, he's also a friend and my nerves are mostly gone when talking with him these days ;)

Thanks for the explaination! I know of some people who come across condescending but really that's not their intention! I appreciate you clearing that up for me!
