Associated Press has a short obit. Once the NY Times story rolled, it's finally starting to get mention in other newspapers and news sources. Now that AP has released their short, it's being picked up by a lot of news services, stations, and other media, although most are just parroting what the AP piece said.

upi also has a short bit.

I've been wondering about the lack of press coverage of this, but part of it probably has to do with the lack of communication from Illy about the sad event. Tips are what lead to the NY Times doing their classy obituary. They've had a long standing respect and admiration for the good Dottore; if you go through their archives, they have some coverage and articles about Ernesto Illy over the years - sparse, but decent stuff.

In comparison with the coverage Mr. Peet's passing last year, there much much much less press. It was surprising to me too. Google news still only turns up 2 stories for "ernesto illy"

This is a very sad day for the espresso world in general. We should keep the memories of people like Dr.Illy, and hold up the spririt. Mark, by thinking of him and pulling a heavenly shot you did exactly what one ought to do.

Thanks!

A sad day indeed ! A gracious and brilliant visionary.  It was my great fortune to spend an afternoon with Dr. Ernesto Illy touring  the Trieste roasting facility. He was bursting with vitality, curiosity and a great sense of humor .This was in 1999 and he was 73 at the time, spending 180 days a year,,traveling the world .
There was a great quote about him "he's forgotten more about espresso than most of us will ever know ".

As our visit was winding down, I realized that I was running late  for my train to Rome .Dr. Illy asked if I wanted to accompany him for a drive to the University of Trieste for a visit to the aroma lab. Without hesitation , I accepted . Never have been so happy to miss a departure .

He'll be missed .

For many years I searched in vain to find ways to improve my coffee. I came to Coffeegeek and found  answers, and a group of like minded lovers of high quality. I feel that in some way it may trivialize Dr. Illy's passing if I say this, but his achievements live on in places like this forum. I make coffee on the shoulders of giants now. I have a greater appreciation for this art/science.

Every story has  an  ending. But the story continues to be told.
