Nice article. I agree that the Hottop is a good roaster right out of the box but with a few mods it can be a damn good roaster. HT did update the ejection assembly a year or more ago. I put the new assembly in my B & haven't had any issues with stuck beans or greens falling out since. Replace the stock rear filter assy with a stainless computer filter screen & you will get much better air flow along with much longer cleaning intervals.

Great article! I've had my Hottop for almost two months and on my 6th pound I coffee. I roast one or two times a week and have been enjoying fantastic coffee since day one. It's solidly built, quiet, and I have found it extremely approachable to someone new to roasting. The new K-type probe in the rear of the machine is really consistent roast to roast and makes it a cinche to roast to the same level time and time again. I couldn't b happier and really enjoyed reading about your unique experiences with the Hottop!
FWIW I had the same concern issue, but have been happily roasting on the Hottop in my kitchen for 2 months. I bought a cheap window fan and roast in front of it. The fan really sucks out all smoke and any residual smell doesn't hang around for more than 30 minutes. Most of the smell comes from the machine anyways, so when I put it back in my pantry, the smell goes away quickly. Most importantly, my wife has not had one bad thing to say about smell or smoke. She was actually impressed by how well the window fan has worked. It definitely would depend on the kitchen but this has worked well for me!
