Reviving this old thread. My daughter just spent her first weekend in New Orleans the week before Christmas and did her Christmas shopping their: her brother got a Saints t-shirt, her grandfather a Jazz t-shirt, and I got a can of Café du monde coffee.
My first and only visit to New Orleans was in 1966, and I have fond memories of the café au lait and beignets.
I have grown into a bit of a coffee snob over the years, and was surprised at how good this coffee is, when made properly. IMHO, this means using it *only* for café au lait. I think the standard recipe on the can is for extra strong coffee, to be mitigated by the milk. I believe it is designed to be unpalatable if taken black.
Although not normally a big café au lait fan, I find that this strong coffee-chicory holds up well with hot milk. Very easy to make using a melitta drip filter and microwaving your milk in the mug beforehand.
After all these years, I still remember those great CdM mugs, too!
It was a great article: the Café du Monde is an absolute must for anybody visiting New Orleans.
