Hey Mark - good article as always. I personally love the Illy logo cups made by IPA - nice and heavy and hold a lot of heat.
Just out of curiosity - do you use the majority of your Illy art cups, or are they for display only? I just got my first set of 6 (the Jeff Koons set) and I do plan on using them, but am going to get some more and I'm not sure if I should just keep them boxed up. Will using them will hurt their long term value, if they're well kept?

Most of my illy cups are either for display only, or still in their boxes (I have a lot of "doubles"). In some cases, the cups are just too cool looking not to use (re: Aliens), or I may have been contracted to photograph them (re: pen tests, rosenquist cups).

Illy is still light weight. The La Marzocco espresso cups are 178 grams. If you like Illy for the art work, fine, but otherwise, get the La Marzocco cups that are dramatically less expensive, bought from Espresso Specialists (in Seattle, WA) a year or two ago and < $3 with saucer, but probably sold out now. There is nothing second rate about these cups.

Great article, Mark. Curiously, Cindy and I were just talking about good and bad espresso cups. I had not thought to compare them by weight, and that is because I am a silly goose.

Do you know where I can get the La Marzocco espresso cups? I've checked the ESI website but couldn't find them. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Contact ESI either by email or phone and see if they have them available as a special item.
If not, and you really want some, drop me an email and I can check to see if my local La Marzocco supplier has any left. (Postage from Australia is not cheap)
Cheers

I e-mailed them last month asking the same question. Below is their response:
We sell the La Marzocco cups in sets of 6. If you would like to order the cups please contact our parts department at 800-367-0235 and choose option 9.
Thank you,

It is part V060 in their catalog (sorry, she didn't quote a price).
I agree. When you heat up the LM cups, you know they'll retain all the heat in that little espresso! The feel of the LM cups is a real nice part of the espresso ritual too. (espresso is like religion)
