I don't worry about the spectator aspects very much, but I have to agree that appearance of impropriety is just as damning as actual impropriety.
The fact is biases may not be conscious. That is why scientists conduct double blind studies where the investigator is also kept out of the loop. My ideal barista competition would have the judges in another room through which a small door feeds drinks in and they judge them by the end result and that is it. So long as the barista does not look like he is living in garbage cans, I could care less about appearance, it is not like he is a banker in a 3 piece suit.
Technique and all that other stuff is what it takes to create a good cup of coffee, but the method does not matter nearly as much as the result. If they want to grade technique, it should almost be after the results on flavour are in, and the scoring should definitely be weighted towards the resultant product.

Hi Yotei! Thanks for the offer, it's something I may definitely take you up on, since I'm 99% sure I won't be at the event. No slight whatsoever to Japan or Tokyo - I'd love to visit that culture - just, retired, probably can't afford it (thinking house buying next year) yada yada. A Tokyo trip for me could be as much as 10% of my downpayment on property ;)

Just reviewing this thread - no replies since mid August.
Now that the WBC has had their big NYC meetings, I'm waiting to see what comes out of it. Still all kinda a mystery. Lots of speculation here and there.
If the only rule changes end up being "baristas can set their tables in the 15 minute warm up", I'm going to be sorely disappointed. We've got to see real major changes in the judging structure and accountability.
