Wow. Great story!
I guess that's how it goes. We find something we love, learn more about it, just enough to figure out how much we don't know, then hang out with others who are into the same thing, to learn and love it some more.
I do wonder how any baristas make a living without being the shop owner. I'm not a shop owner, but I think about it from time to time.
I grew up in Portland. Graduated from Portland State, and drank lots of brew sitting in the cafe at Powell's City of Books. I also remember fondly the Rimsky Koursacoffee house (sp?) Is it still there? And what the heck is Stumptown? Is it a slam from those who think all of Oregon's trees are being cut down?
I loved the column. I hope we hear more from you in the future. And congrats on the 5th place finish!!! That took courage to enter! It inspired me.

Malachi, hi. In another post I just felt offended and here you are "a nice guy" - so I'm sorry if I misconceived you. As I said, english is not my mother language and it's hard to understand feelings without mimics sometimes. To your recommendations about baristis - I would welcome that. I was thinking about inviting baristas for some weeks. I would pay for their accomodation & flight, and they can bring some fresh international spirit to my bar during 8 hours per day, and enjoy Vienna the rest of the time, including the tips they get. I hope that sounds fair. Might bring that plan to life next spring to summer. Thanks again! Joey
