Mark, I assume the "unmoderated forum that predates CG" is alt.coffee. I found your comment about it turning people away from the coffee business ironic, because I had been thinking precisely the opposite this week. People who were inspired by that newsgroup to become professionals (including you and me) were all over the Conference. The altie techies were testing their temperature and pressure inventions. The altie palates were making deals to buy more wholesale greens. The altie journalists were snapping photos and writing stories, and the altie lawyer was meeting with new clients.
Considering the much smaller readership of alt.coffee, I'd say that was a pretty impressive impact!

Yeah, it was alt.coffee. It's done its share of running off (and turning off) people, unfortunately. Also unfortunate it's only a few people who do the damage. One I'll name is no one's favourite, daveb (or whatever name he's using this week).
One of the guys specifically had a problem with one of the other very long time members of the forums, and (told me at least) that just a couple of exchanges with that person was enough for him to think if the world of coffee was even worth getting into. He's an inventor who is coming to market very soon with a pretty spiffy product (he's asked me not to talk about it publicly for now). Moving over to CG and other web boards changed his mind.
Also, I'll say this Marshall... alt.coffee ain't what it used to be. It's still got great highlights, but the lowlights seem to happen more frequently.
