SCAA 2006 Charlote Day 2 Report
Road Reports article

Day 2 of the SCAA. A day filled with wonders. disapointments, excitement, and drama. The USBC does its semi finals and the seminars and the trade show floor keep rolling on.

Mark,

Yes, after signing up (and recruiting you! yikes!) to blind test coffees made in the Clover and the Aeropress, it became clear that many variables weren't addressed, such as cooling in the cup and palate cleansing. Add the fact that the grading was done on a flat scale of one to 10, and the results seemed almost arbitrary to me. (Though you were the one who quickly identified the Aeropress' paper filter aftertaste.) I'm glad I was there to see the whole process, including the participants' critique of the study design. The final results certainly are not meaningful, but maybe we can improve the test and try it again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Phuong!  You will always be The #1 Champion :)

Great reports from the show. Yeah, that really bites that they didn't follow the schedule at the WBC.

Wish I was there :)

Thanks for the reports, i wish i was there :)

I just have to ask, what is the Clover thing?
Do you really meen that the Aeropress can extract the same depth in aromas as the La Marzocco, seems unlikely to me. I will have to put this Aeropress gadget to the test sometime :)

Thanks again Mark,
Lars

Ryan Dennhardt is in the finals and going in the final (7) spot. His semifinal score was docked for being overtime, but an appeal/review showed that it was due to slowness on the judges part and he was reinstated. Hope he gets a fair shake in the finals*. Go Ryan!

*Flawless presentation. 9 seconds undertime. He places 7th. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Good grief. Half the finalists are from Chicago? That's awesome.

Late edit: It's Matt! Cool.

Ahhh, back in the office.....

I'll write more later, but the conference was a blast!

I saw Chris Deferio once again, met Perpetual Buzz, Eric Bass, Billy,  saw Nick and Jay running around all over the place, heard the name "dankbean" being whispered behind my back more than once (even by the CG man himself)......and totally managed to survive an entire conference without a single person telling me to smile for the camera!

Dankbean Undercover continues.....muuuhahahaaaaa....

Now I'm going to bed.  I swear this industry just doesn't believe in sleeping.....

~db~

EDIT:  everyone was very friendly, and i met a lot of new people...it's just weird to hear your handle name being mentioned more than your real name.  sorry i didn't meet with you, Mark.  i didn't know i was leaving quite so soon!  ~jp~

Now that's awesome. Congrats to Ryan for an awesome run. Consider the bar raised.

LOL

I rented "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" for the kids the other night, and your post reminds me of the part early in the film where they're arguing about how to divide up the shares.

I won't start. Point taken!

:-)
