Would love to hear your comments on successful (or not) experience with non-commercial machines & Latte Art. Do you feel home machines like Silvia are up to the task? Will the stock steam tip work or do you need a mod?

I don't think that the Silvia is up to the task. I would group all single boiler home machines under this "Latte Art N/A" title. There just isn't enough steam pressure to drive the milk...at least in ALL the home machines I have ever seen. I anxiously await to hear from someone that has consistently and successfully poured latte art with their single boiler home machine. The prep. and priming etc. of this style machine is so labourious that it might be easier to move to Seattle to get latte art in your daily drink. ;)

Hi Aaron!
Thank you for a most informative article! I recently upgraded to a Breville Barista Express BES860 (yes, also a single boiler machine), and have enjoyed the wonderful espresso this machine delivers. My boys (12 and 13 yrs) and I have been going out of our minds trying to create Latte Art! We just can't seem to crack it.
Your epiphany with the steam tips really got me going! I'm quite handy with the lathe, and was wondering if trying to copy the steam tip in your picture would make it possible to steam the milk properly?
